As part of a Philips Design research exploration into virtual worlds as a platform for co-creation and innovation, a ‘co-creation experience’ was developed in the virtual world of Second Life. The goal was to understand the potential role of virtual-community interactions for innovation feedback loops and development of innovation initiatives. The first phase involved creation of a virtual presence and facilitating a series of workshops and discussions with a virtual-community to gain feedback on a number of design research topics as well as to develop experience in virtual creative interactions. Subsequent phases included experiments to connect physical and virtual interactions and in 2008 an ‘innovation quest’ collaboration between the University of Innsbruck, Avaty and Philips Design, co-creating to explore the topic of sustainable living in the future.
